Pasco County Communications Manager Doug Tobin says the Land O' Lakes sinkhole could be mother nature 'taking back' and 'trying to become a lake again'. Officials added that the current activity is 'probably aggravating' pre-existing depressions, but declined to say whether or not the sinkhole was growing. Rough Cut (no reporter narration).
ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Pasco County Communications Manager Doug Tobin says the Land O' Lakes sinkhole is "aggravating" pre-existing vulnerabilities under the ground, but he did not go as far as to say it is growing. Officials say the sinkhole is about 260 feet at the widest point. Seven homes have been condemned since Saturday. Tobin says some have exterior cracking and separating, buckled tile, cracked exteriors and other damage. Debris removal continued Monday along with water removal. Over the weekend, dozens of dump trucks brought limestone and boulders to steady the sinkhole. When it was first reported to authorities in July, the sinkhole was a small depression under a boat in the lakeside neighborhood in Land O' Lakes, about 20 miles (32 km) north of Tampa and about 25 miles east of the Gulf of Mexico. In 2013, about 25 miles away in Seffner, Florida, a man was killed when a sinkhole opened under his bedroom while he was sleeping. Geologists at the University of Florida have defined a sinkhole as typically being a natural depression or hole in the Earth's surface caused when rock, often limestone in Florida, is dissolved over time.
