The National Zoo in Washington, D.C. is getting ready to say goodbye to Bao Bao, the 3-year-old giant panda as she prepares to move to China at the end of the month. Linda So reports.
NATS: "Hi lady. C'mon Bao. good girl" The beloved Bao Bao is getting ready for a big move. The 3-year-old giant panda will move to China next week. This is the crate that will take her there. SOUNDBITE: MARTY DEARIE, BAO BAO'S TRAINER, SAYING: "By giving her honey water while she's sitting in the crate, it just continues to build this space as somewhere she wants to be." Bao Bao's trainer Marty Dearie will make the journey with her. NATS: FIRST CHECKUP He's been with Bao Bao since she was born at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. He was there for her first checkup. For the playful days in the snow. And every day in between. Now he's tasked with helping her make a smooth transition to her new home in China. SOUNDBITE: MARTY DEARIE, BAO BAO'S TRAINER, SAYING: "I will be able to help her with that transition from her life here in America to her new life in China." Bao Bao's older brother Tai Shan returned to China in 2010. As part of a deal with the Chinese government, all cubs born at the National Zoo are required to move to China before their fourth birthday. SOUNDBITE: BRANDIE SMITH, NATIONAL ZOO, SAYING: "I think it's like your kids going off to college. It's a hard thing to do. We're a little bit sad, we're a lot worried. but in the end we know its the right thing to do, and its the best thing for her." Bao Bao's younger brother Bei Bei and her parents will remain at the zoo. She departs for China on February 21st.
