ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION STORY: Heavy rain has caused widespread flooding near Adelaide in South Australia on Saturday (October 1) with rivers bursting their banks as authorities told residents to brace for more bad weather. Army personnel filled and delivered some 60,000 sandbags on Saturday to protect properties as the Gawler and Wakefield rivers overflowed following a night of heavy rain, local media reported. South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill praised those involved in efforts to protect the region. "There's been a herculean effort to protect Port Wakefield. A temporary levy of sandbags has been constructed and up to this point has been effective in protecting the town," Weatherill told reporters in Adelaide. State Emergency Service spokesman Chris Beattie advised locals to be vigilant in protecting their properties. "Listen carefully to the advice of the emergency services authorities, maintain situational awareness and prepare your homes and families in the event that they may be impacted by flooding," he said. On Wednesday (September 28) a state-wide power outage impacted the state's 1.7 million residents. Weather experts are predicting further rain in the region, with up to 100 millimeters of rain expected to fall over the Adelaide Hills region between Sunday (October 2) and Tuesday (October 4), ABC reported.
