ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Residents in the New South Wales town of Forbes were unable to access their properties as floodwaters peaked on Monday (September 26). Though rain has eased, the floodwaters are expected to linger for a few more days and an evacuation order remains in place for about a thousand people in the township, forcing residents to use boats to get around. The Lachlan River, which runs through Forbes, peaked on Sunday (September 25) night at 10.67 metres (35 feet), according to the State Emergency Service, who have answered over 2,300 calls for help. Forbes Shire is home to 9,664 people and agriculture is worth $97.1 million - about 24.5 percent of gross regional product - to the local economy, according to the Central West regional development agency. Various broadacre crops and fruit, as well as cattle and sheep, are grown and farmed in the region.
