While the waters around Rio de Janeiro have gotten a lot of negative attention during the 2016 Olympic Games, one organization has been working to try and change the attitude of locals towards waste and the ocean. Parley for the Ocean teaches kids in Rio about the importance of clean water and what they can do to help protect the world's seas. SOUNDBITE: Mike Longe, director of operations at Parley for the Oceans, saying (English): "It's the youth that we are going to depend on to really shape the future of the oceans, so it's imperative that we teach them now that not only the decisions they make affect the ocean, but also they have the power to really change the world." SOUNDBITE: Marcela, 12-year-old from Niteroi, saying (Portuguese): "I learned to say no to plastic and instead to always use things that don't have plastic in them." As part of the effort, Parley has teamed up with Adidas to repurpose the waste and create a running shoe made of recycled ocean plastic. SOUNDBITE: Tim Janaway, general manager for Adidas Heartbeat Sports, saying (English): "The beautiful, beautiful beaches and bays are full, honestly, of the debris of humanity. The shoe that you've seen is, I think, really cool, it looks good. I don't know if you know but there's some nice touches to it. The green parts, they are actually from fishing nets deep in the ocean and the white parts are from plastic that's been recovered from the surface, from the beaches and coastal areas." The upper plastic of the sneaker is collected from the coastal areas of the Maldives while the netting comes from deep sea fishing nets.
