About 1500 people living in areas north of Los Angeles have been asked to leave their homes as fast-moving wildfires continue to spread. So far the Sand Fire has consumed more than 33,000 acres and destroyed at least 18 homes. One person has been killed by the fire. Years of drought and dry weather conditions along with high winds are fuelling the flames, fire officials said. People living in communities near Santa Clarita, just outside the Angeles National Forest, have been asked to leave their homes. Cars trying to evacuate were at a standstill on the 14 Freeway as residents tried to leave. Evacuation shelters have been set up local officials said. Around 900 firefighters were battling the flames in temperatures that rose above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, along with some 28 helicopters. Officials said they are still trying to pinpoint the cause of the wildfire, which had been only 10 percent contained by early Monday.
