Algae chokes Florida river

Florida's waters are choking from algae, prompting the governor to declare a state of emergency. The source of the growth is believed to be from Lake Okerchobee further upstream. Residents say it smells like "a hundred dead animals" and some have complained of health problems. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED RESIDENT, SAYING: "It is affecting all of us as far as red eyes, runny nose, and the 'in the throat' feeling." Experts say the thickening bloom is a sign of the algae starting to die, which is when it releases toxins. The Army controls Lake Okeechobee and has said it will reduce water flowing from it this weekend.
