Monsoon season has arrived in Kerala. A low pressure system in the Bay of Bengal is expected to drop 4 to 8 inches of rain on this parched, south western state Meteorologist D. Balachandran is predicting even more rain in the next two to three days, after a long, hot summer. (SOUNDBITE) (English) METEOROLOGICAL DEPARTMENT OFFICIAL, D. BALACHANDRAN, SAYING: "Rainfall is very likely to occur at most places in coastal Tamil Nadu and many places in the interior parts of Tamil Nadu." In Chennai on the east coast, officials are expecting as much as 12 inches of rain... But elsewhere, particularly in the country's north, an intense heat wave is tightening its grip. More than 150 people are feared dead with temperatures soaring above 115 degrees Fahrenheit. Many say the conditions are unbearable. (SOUNDBITE) (Hindi) A LOCAL RESIDENT, AMIT MOHURLE, SAYING: "It is difficult to step outside, difficult to go to work due to the intense heat. Roads are wearing a deserted look. We don't feel like doing anything as it is difficult to go outside." Officials are attributing the hotter weather to the El Nino effect, which is the warming the sea-surface temperatures in the Pacific. In this part of India, it shows no signs of abating so hopes are high for an early monsoon.
